Watch this space
Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking. Not just surface things, but also deeper thoughts. Exploratory thoughts, as it were.
Sure, I’ve spent a bunch of time on the usual thoughts: when is that appointment, did I move the laundry into the dryer, what’s for dinner…
But there have been some that I suppose could sound sort of ominous: is this really what I want in life? Is that all there is?
Is that all there is?
One of my thought sessions got me to thinking about how dangerous I am—how dangerous we all are, if we want to exercise our wills.
I am—and you are—one second, and one decision from changing our lives. It could be small, like instead of having a Coke or a coffee, drinking water. Instead of remaining seated, we get up and stand or walk or dance for a minute.
But if we kept making those choices, would we not end up taking in less caffeine (and possibly sugar), and exercising more?
And maybe it’s the bigger stuff: like turning off the news and working on a piece of your own writing or another craft or hobby. Or like saying NO when you want to rather than saying nothing, or agreeing to something you resent or despise, just to keep the peace.
Maybe it’s HUGE, like walking out of your job, packing a suitcase, and leaving; or telling a friend or partner that you are moving on.
You don’t even have to get to those huge things in real life, necessarily. Sometimes it’s good to just remind yourself that you COULD do it. On a bad day, remind yourself “I still could.”
You are more powerful than you know, and more powerful than you allow yourself to be. Day after day, you (like me) limit yourself to established roles.
Will you continue doing that for the rest of 2024? Next year? Until the end, whenever that comes for you?
Never forget that you are one decision away from a new and different life.
