Clutter is decisions that have been deferred. I've got a way to help.

Clutter is decisions that have been deferred. I've got a way to help.

Clutter can fall into a few different categories: things that we want but that aren’t put away or don’t have a home, things we don’t want but haven’t gotten rid of, things we no longer use but haven’t decided to get rid of, things we have never used but we are hopeful we might someday get around to using . . .

Clutter can be made of paper, glass, metal, wood, cloth, or other tangible material. Clutter can also include ephemeral things, like too many thoughts swirling in your head, or too many emails clogging your inbox.

At the core of all these different ways of looking at clutter, however, is one driving principle: Clutter is decisions that have been deferred.

Let me repeat that: Clutter is decisions that have been deferred.

Every single object in your home represents a decision you have made, or one that you are not making. Each item of clothing, each piece of paper, each utensil or tool, each book or DVD, each item or object in your house is a potential string of decisions.

  • Do you like it?

  • Do you use it?

  • Do you want to keep it or not?

  • If you want to keep it, where does it belong?

It is no wonder that the idea and act of decluttering feels overwhelming. Given the sheer number of items and decisions you need to make, it is a lot to deal with.

So if you’ve been beating yourself up because you feel overwhelmed by the idea of decluttering, please let yourself off the hook.

Your reluctance is entirely logical, and completely understandable.

You avoided those decisions for reasons: either they were difficult, or you weren’t sure what criteria to use to make them, or there were simply too many of them. The more of those decisions that you chose to avoid, the more of them that piled up, waiting for you to get to them.

It feels like a lot to deal with because it is a lot to deal with, and anyone who says otherwise isn’t acknowledging the reality of the situation. Fortunately, I have a solution for you.

I created The Declutter Course to share with you a workable decluttering process and provide support as you go, complete with a private Facebook group for participants and weekly coaching calls with me inside the group to tackle issues and questions. This is a robust offering, and it tackles your internal issues as you tackle your clutter. By the time you are through the course, you should feel better about yourself, in a space that makes you happier.

Before and during the decluttering process, you will answer questions for yourself in a journal that is just for you. It will help you to process your feelings, which are inherently tied up with your stuff.

The Declutter Course is a six-week group coaching course that will teach you step-by-step methods to decrease and eliminate the clutter that is bringing you down mentally, emotionally, and physically.

It will free up space for positive energy to circulate in your life. The Declutter Course will not just allow new things to come into your life; it will also get you in touch with who you are once you are freed of so many energetic attachments to your past.

The Declutter Course consists of six weekly email assignments that start small with clearing clutter, and build momentum each week. Our first week is about setting expectations and finding a spot of calm in our rooms. We then focus on clearing one shelf or drawer, then move to one cupboard, one closet, then to one entire room.

This course isn’t just a series of six emails—and I should warn you that some of these emails are loooooong. Here’s what is included:

  • Weekly email assignments full of how-to’s when dealing with categories of clutter.

  • A plan to start small and roll our progress forward, complete with building blocks like how to tackle one drawer, one shelf, one cupboard, one closet…

  • Journaling exercises throughout the experience, as we explore how you feel—at the start and throughout the experience—how you *want* to feel, and how you can let go of negative feelings and support yourself throughout the process.

  • A private Facebook group for you to share your progress, ask questions, and get support from me and the others in the program.

  • Weekly live coaching calls using Facebook Live so that you can ask any questions you have and work through any issues you might be experiencing.

A live round of The Declutter Course is going to start on October 4th, so sign up now! As a bonus, if you sign up before September 6th, you can get lifetime access to this course for $267—a 10% discount. If you want in on this course, sign up now!
