You're *not* on your own kid

You're *not* on your own kid

You’re on your own kid

Today I’m writing from South Carolina, where I am again staying with my mom who has stage 4 cancer. I will be here until mid-June. And I’ve been listening to and singing along with the Midnights album from Taylor Swift.

One of the songs that immediately caught my attention from the time this album came out was track 5. (Swift fans know that track five is given to a song of special significance.) In this case, the song is “you’re on your own kid", and the song details periods in her life with a choral conclusion “you’re on your own kid, you always have been.”

I played it on repeat as I drove to Virginia Beach in April, knowing that my mom had cancer but not knowing for certain what that might look like.

At the time, I was thinking not only about that, but also still working through stuff after my dad’s death in early March, and thinking back on some of the shit that happened in my childhood, etc. I’d sing along, then have my voice crack on “you’re on your own kid, you always have been.”

Because the truth sometimes hurts.

Only now, I play that song often and sing it loud like an anthem, because the ending offers me hope and support:

You’re on your own, kid
Yeah, you can face this
You’re on your own, kid
You always have been
— Taylor Swift

Yeah, you can face this.

The thing about dealing with someone who has a terminal illness is that there isn’t a tidy schedule to follow.

I mean, you can make your own daily schedules or routines, but there’s no way of knowing when a new symptom or complication may appear, when things will take a downturn or a nosedive, what that will look or feel like, etc.

If it sounds like I’m complaining because I don’t have dates certain for things, it’s because I kinda am. I’d love to know things, so I could plan to be here when mom passes. And I realize that I don’t get that—nobody does.

But in the meantime, while the outlook for mom’s health and her trajectory look absolutely terrible, she’s mostly okay most of the time.

I have decided that means it has to be okay for me to be mostly okay, too. And that includes continuing to be a coach who works with clients, at least until something intervenes to make that untenable.

All of which is to say that if you are wanting a tarot reading or some 1:1 coaching in the next few weeks, I am ready and able to work with you. Because even though we are all “on our own” in life in many, many ways, you don’t have to navigate things alone or unsupported.

You can ask for assistance.

YOU are not on your own. Let’s light things up this summer.

Want to know what the cards hold for you? That’s not what a tarot reading actually does, you know. Tarot is more about tapping into your current energy and issues and giving you some guidance: things to consider or think about or ask yourself, so that you can make the best choices for yourself.

Less “does he love me or not” and more “what should I be looking at or considering in this particular situation.” That said, a three card reading can offer guidance on a current situation, including a slight peek at probabilities. And a 10-card Celtic cross is an excellent way to get a picture of your current situation and where you’re heading/trending. I even offer a 13-card spread that is basically a card for every month of the year. Click here to schedule a tarot reading with me.

Coaching with me is wild. It’s a blend of traditional coaching and energy work, with quite a lot of intuitive connection. Maybe we will do some Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or tapping), maybe we will do some breath work, maybe we will pull a card for some guidance, maybe we will have a bit of guided meditation . . . or maybe we will work through your schedule or to-do list or something else that is very much not energy work. It all depends on you and your needs.

Here’s what one of my clients had to say about a session:

I would just like to say thank you to Kelly for another amazing session. The idea of taking your energy back from places you've left it resonated so hard with me and I started to think about all the places I leave it, just lyin' around LOL. After struggling with good sleep and waking on time for a while now, this morning, after yesterday's grounding meditation exercise - I woke up naturally - an HOUR before my alarm! Anyone who is thinking about working with Kelly - just do it already! It's the biggest and best no-brainer decision you will ever make.

In the interest of full clarity, a single 1:1 session with me is currently priced at $150.
