Easing into 2023
Why I’m easing into the new year this year.
The ads are already starting on TV, urging you to GET STARTED NOW and BE A BETTER YOU. But there will be no resolutions for me. No plans to SMASH IT IN 2023!
It’s not that I don’t have dreams, goals, and plans. Of course I do.
But the energy of this time of year is not about hustle. Or chasing things.
And I refuse to believe that it’s about beating myself up. And let’s face it: start-of-year diets, resolutions, even well-intended wellness programs? Those are all based on the notion that there’s something wrong or lacking with you, so you have to devote your energy and attention to fixing it and being “better.”
The thing is, that’s all patriarchal bullshit.
You heard me right: Patriarchal. Bullshit™.
There’s nothing wrong with you if you feel a bit like hibernating at this time of year. That’s legit what this time of year is for, and what it means to nearly all members of the animal world (humans included).
Similarly, there’s nothing wrong with you if you feel like eating more carbs this time of year, or putting on a few pounds. It’s completely natural to live a less active life this time of year. My rheumatologist says so. My cardiologist says so, too.
So that’s what nature has to say about things. Now let’s look at that patriarchal bullshit I mentioned.
The patriarchy wants you to stay small. To shut up. To not get in the way of the big (white) boys, who deserve all the good things in life. You are supposed to keep your head down and work. You are supposed to work a full-time job and also do all the housekeeping and child-rearing AND ALSO would it kill you to be thin and pretty so that the entitled boys can enjoy ogling and harassing you?
Why do I say that’s bullshit? Well, I probably don’t have to explain to you why you deserve the same respect as the average white man, but I will say that the focus on making women smaller/thinner is one way to prevent us from reaching our full potential.
After all, if you are so busy exercising and counting calories, you don’t have as much time to focus on doing good in the world, or on that idea or business you have. Depending on the extent of your exercise or the type and restrictiveness of any diet you may be following, you may literally not have the energy to pursue your life goals in a meaningful way, due to insufficient caloric intake or brain fog caused by restrictive diets.
If you are so busy trying to fit yourself into some “mold” that has been held up to you as desirable, you may also be trying to fit your personality into a mold as well.
The world doesn’t need more cookie-cutter Stepford wives; it needs more of your authentic magic.
I’m going to be easing my way in a bit further by posting daily for the month of January, instead of trying to write a magnum opus weekly. I invite you to stop by when you need a pick-me-up or some encouragement in the new year.
