Practical Magic
I find myself on unfamiliar footing. Rather suddenly, I’ve shifted and unleveled and am no longer quite the same person I was a few weeks back.
Three weeks ago, I was fine. Then I got my first shingles vaccine and Hurricane Ian parked off the East Coast and I ended up losing nearly 10 days to a fibromyalgia flare and cluster migraines, and another five or so days to getting my feet back under me. During that time, I began to realize that I wasn’t the same person I’d been before this recent health adventure started.
Somewhere over the course of days spent in bed, in pain, I left a bunch of stuff behind.
I’ve been hiding parts of myself because I worried they might be off-putting or make others uncomfortable. I’ve been hiding some of them because I worried that I’d be perceived as “weird”, or due to concerns that my abilities are not as developed as those of other people. I’ve been censoring myself in various ways to not seem “too much”. I wanted to “fit in.” To “be normal”.
I’ve decided to heed the words of Aunt Frances in the movie version of Practical Magic:
I’m ready to step forward.
I am now using all of my skills in my coaching business — my spiritual gifts along with my practical coaching skills.
On a recent call with a client, I said (somewhat flippantly), that I’m equal parts practicality and practical magic. And my client said “Yes! That’s exactly it!”
While I am sure there will still be times when I want to try to cover up or hide my skills, especially around folks I don’t know particularly well, I plan on bringing all of them to the table with my coaching clients. Those skills include tons of practical, tried-and-trued life coaching strategies, plus real-world experience with a freakishly large list of issues and ideas. They also include skills like reiki, feng shui skills (including some energy healing), claircognizance (a psychic sort of ability), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or tapping), oracle and tarot cards (I’m actually a really good tarot reader), and more.
Not every session will include all those things, of course, but I will happily and readily use whichever skills are called for with any and all of my clients from now on, and will be happy to tell you more about any of them if you’d like. Just drop me a comment and let me know what you’re interested in!
